Prior to the release of Illmatic, Nas had three credits to his name. Fortunately, for him, and for us all, he finds it: Illmatic.
He is searching not only for a way to make money but for his place in the world, one that properly rewards the expression of his considerable gifts and allows him to stay true to his street origins but that won’t land him in the penitentiary or the morgue. There is also the call to create sonic urban art with literary content.
So the call of the street is not the only voice he hears. Hiphop is thriving as a commercial enterprise, and the young man has a distinctive voice and exceptional talent for rhyming rhythmically over beats. Yet, surrounded by poverty, crime, and alienation, and in possession of few job skills, Nasir hears the call of the streets-drug dealing, theft, robbery, gambling-and, to some extent, heeds it.īut he comes from a long line of musicians, including his father Olu Dara (a jazz artist), and is early exposed to the venerable African American musical tradition. There are numerous books in his home, though, and learning is valued there, so he continues his studies informally, devouring works of black history and expanding his vocabulary. Though highly intelligent, desirous of knowledge, and bursting with creativity, the young man becomes disillusioned with school, losing all respect for his teachers, and drops out after only eight years of formal education. He is raised largely by his hardworking mother Ann Jones, who provides a loving and stable household despite the ghetto’s oppressive social environment. On April, 2009 Kelis filed for divorce, and on July she gave birth to their son, Knight.Born September 14, 1973, a black youth named Nasir (which means “helper and protector” in Arabic) grows up in the notorious Queensbridge Housing Projects in Queens, NY. In 2005 Nasir married rhythm and blues singer Kelis. The conflict was settled by 2005, and rappers even performed on one stage with Jay-Z’s song Dead Presidents, sampled from Nas’ composition The World Is Yours. Jay-Z’s Takeover was replied with Nas’ song Ether, which was later included into his album Stillmatic (2001). By 2001 Nas and Jay-Z had an intense relationship, and everybody found out about their feud after the songs, in which both rappers mocked each other. The Autobiography (1999), with every track describing some part of his life. A year later the musician released his album I Am.

In 1998 Nas co-wrote and starred in the movie Belly, directed by Harold Williams. That album was certified platinum, however the musicians decided to split and to work on their solo projects. In 1997 the record titled Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Nature Present The Firm: The Album was issued. Later Cormega quitted the band, and his place was taken by Nature. Dre’s label Aftermath Entertainment and started working on their debut album. About this time Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown and Cormega organized the super-band The Firm. Due to the new sound and such songs as If I Ruled the World (Imagine That) and Street Dreams Nas became a part of the mainstream hip-hop. Nas’ second album It Was Written was released in 1996.
